A Night with Janis Joplin
Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock ’n’ roll. Her unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Fueled by such unforgettable songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart,” “Mercedes Benz,” “Cry Baby,” and “Summertime,” this sensational and electrifying Broadway show is a musical journey and joyful ruckus celebrating Joplin and her biggest musical influences—icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smith.
This performance will be open captioned. Please contact the ticket office at 301.581.5100 to reserve the best seating for open caption viewing.
- Exposure to the musical talents of blues artists Leadbelly, Bessie Smith, and Big Mama Thornton in her teens made Joplin decide to become a singer.
- Kelly McIntyre reprises her role of Joplin on Strathmore’s stage. Critics have hailed McIntyre’s portrayal of the rock icon as “superb, embracing both Joplin’s brash and bawdy side, as well as her vulnerability” (Nippertown).
- Joplin was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and posthumously given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
- Joplin’s album Pearl was ranked #122 on the Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list in 2003.
This performance will run approximately 150 minutes with intermission.
