As one of the world’s most singular voices, Grammy Award-winning Mexican-American musical artist Lila Downs has been thrilling audiences and defying genres for decades. Down’s voice is unforgettable, her approach to music is innovative, and her poignant storytelling transcends all language barriers. She reinterprets music from its roots, fusing together pop, Mexican, and indigenous sounds. Downs’ unique mélange of languages and cultures, aided by her upbringing in both Minnesota and Oaxaca, Mexico, allows her to bridge traditions from across the Americas, with influences ranging from the folk and ranchera music of Mexico to North American jazz and blues.
- Downs has recorded 9 studio albums, winning a Grammy (for 2011’s Pecados y Milagros) and 4 Latin Grammys.
- Her 2015 release, Balas y Chocolate (Bullets & Chocolate) was inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebration as well as her personal reflections on death.
- At the 75th Academy Awards ceremony she performed the Oscar nominated song Burn It Blue (from the movie Frida) with Brazilian composer Caetano Veloso.
