Joel Fan, piano

Joel Fan is celebrated for his exuberant virtuosity and a bold repertoire that embraces piano classics and inspired discoveries of contemporary and world music. He puts on, in the words of the The Baltimore Sun’s Tim Smith, “one of the most satisfying piano performances I’ve heard.” As a concerto soloist, Fan has performed over 40 different concertos with acclaimed orchestras worldwide. His latest album, Dances for Piano and Orchestra, focuses on the intersection of music and dance, with rarely heard compositions by Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Pierné, Weber-Liszt, Castro, and Gottschalk, plus the world premiere recording of Charles Cadman’s “Dark Dancers of the Mardi Gras.”

  • You may recognize Fan as a member of the Silk Road Ensemble featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
  • Fan has won several international competitions, including the Busoni International Piano Competition in Italy.
  • Fan has performed recitals on 4 continents, with recent tours through China, Cuba, and South America.

*The COUPLETS Suite is a set of pieces that explore the interplay of collaboration, creativity, and personal relationships. It was premiered at the Open Source Music Festival in New York City by Joel Fan in November 2017. Written by prominent married composer couples who each devised their own unique method of collaboration, every piece contains their “musical DNA.” Collectively, the COUPLETS encompass a wide variety of styles and represent a state-of-the-art of piano composition of our time.
