Concerto for Violin, Rock Band, and String Orchestra
Composed by R.E.M.’s Mike Mills for Robert McDuffie
Featuring Fifth House Ensemble
Orchestrations and Additional Music by David Mallamud
Classical collides with contemporary in this adventurous concerto that features a four-piece rock band and a string orchestra. Grammy nominated violinist Robert McDuffie commissioned Mike Mills, founding member of seminal rock band R.E.M., to compose the piece. The performance, with arrangements and additional music by David Mallamud, features McDuffie on violin along with the Fifth House Ensemble and Mills, naturally, will perform with the rock band on bass and keys.
- Mike Mills and Robert McDuffie have been close friends since they were teenagers growing up in Macon, Georgia.
- Mills, the son of a tenor who sang on The Ed Sullivan Show and in the Naval Aviation Choir, developed a keen ear for harmonies and a talent for playing instruments at an early age.
- McDuffie is no stranger to rock collaborations, having shared the stage with Gregg Allman and Rolling Stones’ keyboardist Chuck Leavell.
