Artist in Residence
Trey Sorrells, jazz saxophonist

Sponsored by Dale Rosenthal and Michael Cutler

Trey Sorrells fell in love with the saxophone when he was just 12 years old. After honing his sax skills in church, Sorrells became enamored with hard-bop jazz music popularized by musicians like Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis. By integrating the technical aspect of hard-bop style jazz with the soulful melodies of gospel, Sorrells creates an original sound resembling a mix of R&B, funk, and hip-hop. Sorrells has performed with legendary musicians Dick Oatts, Boris Koslov, the Chuck Brown Band, Darrin Atwater’s Soulful Symphony, and he is currently a part of the band Future Prospect.

  • While at Virginia Commonwealth University, Sorrells had the privilege to be part of an international jazz exchange program that allowed him to travel to South Africa to teach, perform, and record.
  • In March 2018, Sorrells performed in the Richmond Jazz Society Guest Artist Educator Series as a tribute to late saxophonist Joe Henderson.
  • Sorrells is endorsed by D’Addario Woodwinds, a company dedicated to providing artists with the equipment necessary to create their best sound.

Don't miss Trey Sorrell's workshop on June 19.
