Tell Your Story
Powerful stories can be used for self-advocacy and self-defense. We want to harness the arts - in this case, storytelling, poetry, photography and video - to support racial equity and build community in our county. The theme for the workshops is Home and Identity.
This workshop is a partnership of Strathmore, Story Tapestries, IMPACT Silver Spring, and Arts on the Block.
Our instructors are professional artists in storytelling, slam poetry, hip-hop and visual art. They will teach participants how to tell their personal stories through spoken word and visual arts. At the end, participants will have the option to perform/present their pieces, joined by professional storytellers/visual artists. Local musicians will provide musical accompaniment.
Who should attend?
This multi-generational workshop is intended for anyone 7th grade or older who would like to express themselves and tell their story through art. It is particularly intended for people of color, people who claim many places as their home, or who have recently moved to Montgomery County from far away.
Your life is full of amazing stories. In this fun and inspiring workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to identify story ideas and turn those funny, dramatic, or heart-wrenching moments from your life into a short performance or pop-up art exhibit.
What will I learn?
You will gain an understanding of the key tools of creating and performing a story: how to find universal themes in personal stories, figure out the strongest and most interesting parts to include, and pacing. You’ll also strengthen your confidence in speaking out to a group, strategies for calming your nerves, and enjoy hearing and seeing the stories of the other participants. Using photography and video, a participant-centered visual art experience will be provided that will complement the storytelling component of the Amplify US! series. A mural made of photos and short video clips will help amplify a rich, cultural mosaic of community voices.
Interpreters are available - if you or someone you know would like to participate with the help of an interpreter, please let us know.
