The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Presented by Strathmore Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 2:00 PM Music Center at Strathmore
Anarchic, funny, and mind bogglingly versatile, this virtuosic “orchestra” has sixteen-handedly changed the face of the ukulele world, taking on and transforming iconic works from Beethoven to The Who to Isaac Hayes. As the players themselves put it: “You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll never think about music in the same way… it’s just one plucking thing after another.” But don’t take their word for it; The New York Times says “there are lots of yuks in ukes: physical comedy, pun-filled banter between songs and stacks of fleeting musical allusions within each piece keep the orchestra’s show lively.”
This concert will run approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.
PLEASE NOTE: Metro will perform major track work over the weekend of October 19-21. The work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and continue through system closing on Sunday.
Free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between the Grosvenor and Friendship Heights stations. Two stations will be closed – Medical Center and Bethesda. Customers using shuttle bus service should build an extra 30 minutes into their travel plans.
The last train from Shady Grove will depart 32 minutes earlier than normal -- at 1:58 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and at 10:58 p.m. on Sunday night -- to allow for shuttle bus connections.
