Hosted by Mountain Stage Artistic Director Larry Groce, this concert features five performers whose sound captures the depth of feeling and honesty that make this program a genuine musical experience. The June 19th Strathmore concert marks Mountain Stage’s 600th show. This evening of live performance will be recorded and broadcast in the U.S. and beyond.
Headlining this performance is singer-songwriter Guy Clark. After cutting his teeth at home in West Texas with friends and touring partners like Townes Van Zandt, Clark’s folk and blues-influenced country came of age on the Nashville scene. Clark’s songs have been recorded and performed by some of Nashville’s legends, including Johnny Cash, George Strait and Vince Gill.
Guitarist and singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III, on the scene since the 1960s, has had many influences including Elvis and Dylan. Wainwright has garnered two GRAMMY nods and a Billboard hit (1972s “Dead Skunk”) and has been featured in numerous TV and movie appearances, including M*A*S*H, The Aviator (2004), and Big Fish (2003).
Also featured is Last Train Home, the roots-rock band, powered by guitars, mandolins, pianos, trumpets and more, has won fans from Washington, D.C. to Nashville. Their popular alt-country sound is captured on the recent release “Bound Away.”
Michael Penn, the alt-rock older brother of Hollywood actor Sean Penn, is the latest addition to the lineup. Described as "the thinking person's pop musician," Penn has won widespread praise for his lyricism and creative edge as one Vox reviewer noted: "Penn stands alongside Randy Newman in the foremost rank of American lyricists. His freeform songwriting creates tracks of startling shape and originality, offering literate reflections on the human condition."
JUST ADDED: Raul Midon - this blind singer-guitarist has performed with artists Jason Mraz and Jennifer Lopez. With a new album due out he's headed up the charts - catch him now.
