W'Air Are They Now?
Christian Douglas, Class of 2020

As a member of Strathmore’s Artist in Residence (AIR) program, singer-songwriter and musical theater performer Christian Douglas delighted audiences with his heartfelt storytelling and soulful tenor voice. We caught up with the Towson, Maryland, native ahead of his arrival in DC with the national tour of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, playing at The Kennedy Center through September 24.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE PART OF STRATHMORE’S AIR PROGRAM?

I applied because I wanted to take a step forward on my path as a singer-songwriter. I knew it was a place where I would get to write and perform original music, receive expert mentoring and guidance, and get to collaborate with other incredible artists with different styles and backgrounds.

HOW HAS YOUR CAREER CHANGED SINCE AIR?

I left The U.S. Army Chorus and moved to NYC in 2021 to pursue a career in musical theater. I have had the opportunity to perform all over the country as part of two Broadway national tours, including Moulin Rouge. I was also able to come back to New York and lead the off-Broadway revival of Kinky Boots.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On the writing side of things, I am working on a musical called The Sound. I’m collaborating with two incredible writers in New York and have been working on the show remotely while I’ve been on the road. We hope to have a workshop of the musical in New York in the fall. On the performing side of things, I am looking forward to stepping into the [lead] role of Christian in Moulin Rouge at the end of September, after The Kennedy Center run.
