Join us for an intimate conversation exploring the enduring legacy of two jazz titans as we celebrate the centennial of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Former Kennedy Center jazz curator Kevin Struthers will lead a discussion with two distinguished voices in contemporary jazz about how these revolutionary artists forever changed the landscape of American music.
Panelist Elijah Jamal Balbed, winner of the 2020 DC Jazz Prix Competition and former collaborator with go-go legend Chuck Brown, brings a unique perspective bridging traditional jazz with contemporary innovation through his groundbreaking JoGo Project.
Panelist Thad Wilson, trumpet virtuoso and fixture on the DC jazz scene since 1997, leads the acclaimed Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra and has performed with legends including George Benson, James Moody, McCoy Tyner, and Roy Hargrove. His energetic approach recalls Louis Armstrong while incorporating progressive elements of blues, funk, Gospel, and hip-hop.
Together, this dynamic panel will examine Davis’s and Coltrane's groundbreaking contributions while exploring how today's new guard of jazz artists—including tonight's featured performer Emmet Cohen—continue to push boundaries and honor the masters who came before. The conversation will delve into the spiritual and technical innovations that made Davis and Coltrane household names, their influence on contemporary jazz education, and how their fearless approach to musical exploration continues to inspire artists who blend tradition with innovation.
