(NORTH BETHESDA, MD)- Strathmore’s Artist in Residence (AIR) Gerson Lanza, who is full of rhythm and style, delivers the final performance of the 2021-22 class, June 8 and 22 at AMP by Strathmore. In addition to his performances, he will conduct a special workshop, Say It with Your Feet: Rhythm Exploration of a Tap Dancer, at Strathmore’s historic Mansion on June 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Originally from La Ceiba, Honduras, Gerson grew up around a culture of vibrant music and rhythms. He first encountered tap dance after moving to Harlem, New York City, in 2001. He immediately fell in love with the art form after his first exposure.

"Miles Davis has a huge impact on me, as well as Common, and the talent that surrounds me," said Lanza.

He began his training at Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing and Visual Arts under his first mentor Omar Edwards. Lanza has completed residencies at Lincoln Center, Jacob's Pillow, and The Guggenheim "Work in Progress," performed at the historic Harlem Cotton Club, and starred in 'After Midnight,' a Broadway production.

Lanza has been privileged to entertain audiences worldwide for the last decade. While continuing a rewarding career as a tap dancer and instructor, Lanza is now pursuing a Masters in Fine Arts in Dance Performance Studies at the University of Maryland College Park.

Lanza’s residency is sponsored by Dale Rosenthal and Michael Cutler & Linda and Van Hubbard.

Strathmore graciously thanks our Artist in Residence Champions for their multi-year commitment and above-and-beyond support to the AIR program.

ABOUT THE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (AIR) PROGRAM

Founded in 2005, the Strathmore Artist in Residence program has mentored 100 young musicians, ages 16–32. Each year, six artists are chosen through a competitive selection process. Over the course of 10 months, they benefit from the support of mentor musicians, 30 hours of professional development seminars, and performance opportunities—including residency concerts at Strathmore. The AIR program is part of Strathmore’s Institute for Artistic and Professional Development.
