Grammy-winning American roots artists Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer join Chinese classical hammered dulcimer player, and former Strathmore Artist in Residence, Chao Tian in a concert that journeys From China to Appalachia and beyond. The trio’s repertoire features traditional Chinese and Appalachian music, alongside fresh arrangements of global folk songs. Instruments like the ukulele, yangqin, and guitar come together in inventive takes on classics like “Dark Eyes,” transforming this Russian folk song into a jazz manouche tune. Together, Fink and Marxer harmonize with Tian on a Chinese lullaby, “Nani Wan,” while Tian shares her passion for American old-time music through fiddle tunes and songs.
Their album From China to Appalachia has earned praise from National Public Radio, Songlines Magazine, and CDHotlist.com, and reached the top of both the Billboard Bluegrass and Folk Radio charts. The Bluegrass Situation calls their collaboration “one-of-a-kind.”
Born of friendship and jam sessions, From China to Appalachia celebrates the power of music to connect cultures.
