MUSIC PROGRAM

Silvestre Revueltas Janitzio
Sergei Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
Olga Kern, piano
William Dawson Negro Folk Symphony

Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is beloved for its unforgettable melodies, emotional depth, and sweeping orchestral texture. From passionate intensity to tender melancholy, it captures the full range of human feeling—and has inspired multiple other musical renditions. The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra welcomes back Olga Kern, acclaimed for her brilliant technique and expressive power, to perform this iconic work at the Music Center at Strathmore.

Kern’s dynamic artistry brings Rachmaninoff’s music to life, blending technical mastery with bold, emotional interpretation in one of the greatest works in the piano repertoire.

The concert opens with Silvestre Revueltas’ Janitzio, a vivid orchestral celebration inspired by the folk rhythms and vibrant spirit of a small island town in Mexico. Full of color, movement, and cultural pride, the piece sets the stage with infectious energy.

Closing the program is William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, a rarely performed American masterpiece. Rooted in African American spirituals and folk melodies, Dawson’s work is richly textured, deeply moving, and powerfully resonant—a reflection on history, identity, and enduring strength.

Don’t miss this stirring evening of global voices, legendary music, and unforgettable performances.
