Trombonist and composer Marcel Penzes, a 2025 Strathmore Artist in Residence, brings the spirit of New Orleans jazz to life—from the sweet melodies of French Quarter music halls to the lively, soulful sounds of the city’s streets. Celebrating jazz as it was originally intended—a joyful, collective expression of life—Penzes performs music from the songbooks of Louis Armstrong, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and more. A familiar presence at local festivals like DC Jazz Fest and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Marcel has also taken the stage at the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, and other iconic venues. He holds degrees in jazz studies from Johns Hopkins’ Peabody Conservatory and Indiana University.
