National Philharmonic kicks off its 40th Anniversary Season with Rachmaninoff Festival, a celebration of the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff featuring three outstanding piano soloists alongside the NatPhil Orchestra under the baton of magnetic guest conductor Joseph Young. Oleg Volkov, who won critical acclaim for his work with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, dazzles with his rousing performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Inon Barnatan, "a true poet of the keyboard," performs Rachmaninoff's renowned and deeply emotional Piano Concerto No. 2 (The Evening Standard). And Sergei Babayan, known for his masterful interpretations of Rachmaninoff’s works, performs his “sensitive, utterly thrilling” rendition of Piano Concerto No. 3 (Boston Music Intelligencer).
*Note: Daniil Trifonov will no longer be performing in this program due to illness. He will be replaced by Inon Barnatan performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
