Auditions typically take place in the late spring with an additional mid-year audition when possible. Check back here for updates!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do parents schedule an audition?
An online application link must be filled out and returned (audition application will be linked above when active).
How should I prepare for my audition?
Warm-up your voice by singing before you arrive. Get a good night’s sleep before your audition and stay hydrated that day. Arrive 15 minutes early so your parent/guardian can check you in and you can relax.
What will happen at the audition?
Students sing exercises with up to nine other students in their approximate age group. Vocal Interviews are divided by elementary, middle and high school. Singers learn some music, do some warm-ups, meet our directors, and get a feel for what rehearsal is like. The session will last about 25 minutes.
How are children placed in an ensemble?
For children entering grades 2–12 (who are at least 7 years of age), placement will be considered for the following ensembles:
- Preparatory Chorus, Grades 2-5, rehearsing Mondays 5:30-6:30pm at Strathmore.
- Apprentice Chorus, Grades 3-6, rehearsing Tuesdays 5:15-6:15pm at Strathmore.
- Treble Chorus, Grades 5-10, rehearsing Tuesdays 6:30-8pm at Strathmore.
- Concert Chorus (open to unchanged male voices and girls), Grades 6-12, rehearsing Mondays 5:30-7pm at AMP by Strathmore.
- Young Men's Chorus (tenor/baritone/bass singers through age 18), Grades 6-12, rehearsing Mondays 6:45-8:15pm at AMP by Strathmore.
Strathmore: 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda, Maryland
AMP by Strathmore: 11810 Grand Park Avenue, North Bethesda, Maryland (in Pike & Rose)
Acceptance and Placement
Based on the audition results, the SCC Artistic Director determines which ensemble is the best fit for the student. Once accepted, the singer joins the ensemble for the entire season.
Results and placement will be sent no later than six weeks following auditions. Families must then confirm their acceptance of choir placement by registering their child for SCC via the provided online form and paying tuition. A Parent Orientation will take place during the first few weeks of rehearsals in September.
Evaluations for Current Members
Current members of SCC need not re-audition. The evaluations for Preparatory, Apprentice, and Treble Chorus students will have the director's recommendation for ensemble placement for the following year. Concert and Young Men's Chorus' do not have placement information, as those two ensembles represent our oldest students and they work on the most challenging repertoire among our ensembles.
Tuition Requirements & Financial Aid
Tuition for the 2018-2019 is $675; students admitted mid-year will be charged $375. There is a $50 discount for siblings. The non-refundable application fee of $25, required prior to auditioning, will be credited to student tuition for students admitted to the chorus. Wardrobe costs not included. Scholarships are available for both tuition and wardrobe upon approval. Please contact Suzanne Bagheri at sbagheri(at)strathmore.org to request an application.
