Step Afrika! Step Xplosion Preshow Event
A Conversation with C. Brian Williams

4–4:30pm in Music Center Education Room 402

At 2020’s Step Xplosion, Step Afrika! will perform an excerpt of their newest production, Drumfolk, in anticipation of the full production’s world premiere later in 2020. Join us before the show for a brief conversation with C. Brian Williams, founder and executive director of Step Afrika!, where he will discuss the inspiration and creative process behind Drumfolk.

Drumfolk is inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739, an overlooked historical event that forever transformed African American life and culture. When Africans lost the right to use their drums, the beats found their way into the body of the people, the “Drumfolk.” New percussive forms took root, leading to the development of some of our country’s most distinct performance traditions like ring shout, tap, and stepping.

Access to this preshow event is free with show ticket, but registration is highly recommended as space is limited. Seats will only be available to those who have registered until 3:50pm, at which point remaining seats will be released to the standby line.
