Verdi    Messa da Requiem

Verdi inserts drama into his Requiem, written in 1874 in memory of his friend poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, whom the composer greatly admired. The work offers the excitement of opera, magnificent symphonic writing and virtuosic moments for the vocalists. Musicologist David Rosen calls it “probably the most frequently performed major choral work composed since the compilation of Mozart’s Requiem.”
