Niyaz Preconcert Panel Discussion:
Sufism: Ancient, Appropriated, Alive
Preregistration for this panel discussion is full. Patrons who have not preregistered are welcome to join the standby line. Remaining seats will be released to the standby line at 6:35pm.
Niyaz blends medieval Sufi poetry, folk songs from their native Iran and a modern mélange of acoustic and electronic sound to create contemporary music with a deep social message of unity and peace. Before hearing this “evolutionary force in contemporary Middle Eastern music”, come learn about the history of Sufism (or taṣawwuf in Arabic). You’ll also get insight on the elements of the unique fusion of the traditional and contemporary in the music of Niyaz and that of similar world music artists.
Loga Ramin Torkian, Niyaz multi-instrumentalist and composer
Kamyar Arsani, musician
Rimi Basu, Performer, Director of Shakti Foundation for Arts and Culture
Dr. Nader Majd, Director, Center for Persian Classical Music
