Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
with Wynton Marsalis
Charlie Parker Centennial
Under the music direction of Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) pays tribute to Charlie Parker, the iconic saxophonist and bebop pioneer. Known for his improvisational genius, breakneck speed, and game-changing harmonic ideas, Parker created a new brand of jazz that is a thrilling experience to see performed live. The masterful players of JLCO transform Parker’s best-known pieces into virtuosic big band charts with solos that allow the band’s improvisers to let loose.
By today’s standards, Parker’s music is upbeat and catchy, but it’s also a reminder of an era of fierce competition between musicians, with soloists pushing themselves to their limits to impress audiences and prove themselves to bandleaders. This spirit of showy competition has grown more playful and friendly over the years, but Parker’s music still inspires musicians to make audiences’ jaws drop when it’s their turn to shine.
