Strathmore's 2019-2020 season celebrates artistic collaboration.
“Planning the artistic season at Strathmore is less about imagining a concept to find artists and more about responding to the way artists are creating and presenting their work,” Strathmore Artistic Director Joi Brown explains while discussing Strathmore’s 2019–2020 season. A wide range of artists are pairing up—sometimes in a single genre and sometimes in complementary or contrasting forms—and it’s these collaborations that lead to the theme of Inspired Pairings. This carefully curated, season-long exploration is dedicated to celebrating how different artists work together in new and inspiring ways.
The first seeds of this idea came from our Artist in Residence (AIR) program, which has always emphasized the importance of cross-genre collaboration. But what makes a joint effort work well? “The musicians need to be up for exploration,” says Betty Scott, director of the AIR program, “in addition to having a high level of musical integrity and being a good listener.” Scott is excited to present four of this season’s Music in the Mansion concerts that will highlight the collaborations of AIR alumni.
Sometimes the pairings are completely unexpected, and other times they make so much sense you wonder why they didn’t happen sooner. A concert that is perhaps as unlikely as it is inevitable is Abigail Washburn and Wu Fei’s April performance. American banjo player Washburn and Chinese musician Fei’s performance brings new meaning to the term “in concert.” Their work is a melodic conversation between close friends who listen to each other with a respect matched by their individual virtuosity.
“When artists collaborate, the range of colors and nuance expands. The work becomes more dimensional and broadens in its perspective,” says Brown.
We hope you will broaden your own perspective by joining us at an Inspired Pairings show this season!
