National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba
with Esperanza Spalding
This stellar orchestra is largely to thank for infusing Cuban and Latin American music into the international classical music community, but their repertoire doesn’t end there. Jazzy arrangements of beloved symphonic works and masterful chamber pieces laced with Afro-Cuban beats earned standing ovations during their debut US tour five years ago, and you should expect nothing less with world-renowned, genre-bending bassist and vocalist Spalding joining the orchestra on stage. Rooted in jazz traditions but never bound by them, Spalding is known for her vivacious exploration of performance art forms that allows her to luminously integrate with the rich music traditions of the orchestra.
- Want to be transported to the Tropicana? A review from The Tampa Bay Times on the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba’s debut US tour praises their more classical symphonic works but states, “What is special is when the musicians make like a big dance band from the Tropicana, the legendary nightclub in Havana.”
- Spalding’s latest release, Emily’s D+Evolution, is lauded as “a fresh artistic vision for the 4-time Grammy winner, a daring tapestry of music, vibrant imagery, performance art, and stage design” by Ebony, which also may be the perfect way to describe the magic she brings to the stage.
- Spalding’s appearances at the Oscars, the Nobel Prize Ceremony, the White House, and with Prince and Herbie Hancock make it clear she effortlessly shines in any spotlight.
