Creative Writing Workshops
Presented by Community Building Art Works
in Partnership with Strathmore
Creative writing is a tool for knowing yourself, understanding the world, and connecting with other people. Led by author Seema Reza and accomplished guest writers—including poets, memoirists, novelists, and storytellers—these community workshops follow the model developed by Community Building Art Works over the course of a decade of bringing people together in military and hospital settings. Each workshop is designed to help participants put their personal stories on paper in a supportive environment.
Whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years, you are welcome; no experience is required. Bring a pen, a notebook, and an open mind!
Strathmore's Virtual Programming is supported by AARP Maryland.
Free, register online. Please note, registration closes 60 minutes before each session. Attendance is limited to the first 100 people. A Zoom link will be emailed to participants 30 minutes prior to the event. If you do not receive the Zoom link 30 minutes prior to the event, please check your spam folder or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Zoom can be accessed by any computer or tablet web browser, and iPhone or Android phones. A built-in web camera and microphone is recommended, but not necessary to participate. If you do not already have Zoom on your device, you will be prompted to download and install the Zoom desktop client on your computer, or download the app (iOS and Android) on mobile/tablet. We recommend doing this before the start of the session so you’re ready to go!
Drafting the Personal Essay
With Seema Reza
Thu, June 18, 7pm
The personal essay is a process of discovery, of honoring knowledge. In this workshop we’ll look at a few essay excerpts, do one or two exercises of discovery, and then get to writing a draft of a personal essay.
Seema Reza is the author of the poetry collection A Constellation of Half-Lives and the memoir When the World Breaks Open. Reza has led writing workshops within correctional facilities, military and civilian hospitals, and schools. She is the Executive Director of Community Building Art Works, a unique arts organization that encourages the use of the arts as a tool for narration, self-care, and socialization among a military population struggling with emotional and physical injuries.
We rely on charitable gifts from individuals to sustain and expand our visual and performing arts experiences and arts education programs. Your gift will foster incredible social impact by allowing Strathmore to remain a strong and vibrant resource in your community.
