Artist in Residence:
Drew Kid

Sponsored by Myra Turoff and Ken Weiner

Combining idioms from countless genres, Drew Kid’s unique take on soul and funk defies traditional boundaries. The son of Filipino immigrants, Kid began studying piano at six years old. Inspired in part by artists like Sly Stone and Marvin Gaye, Kid fuses his jazz pedigree from years in local bands like the Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra, Capital Focus Jazz Band, and Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra with the music of the DC hip-hop community to push soul and funk into the modern day for a sound of unified joy and energy.

  • Rebirth, the album Kid recorded as leader of the Oooh Child Ensemble, was named in the Washington City Paper’s Best Local Music of 2015 list.
  • Recently, Kid performed with a vocal ensemble from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts at former Vice President Joe Biden’s residence.
  • Since joining the Capital Focus Jazz Band in 2009, Kid has travelled the world performing with the ensemble.

Don't miss Drew Kid's free workshop on March 21.
