Clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, described by The Washington Post as an “artist of indescribable genius,” brings his unparalleled talent to Mozart’s only concerto for clarinet, written at the peak of his compositional abilities—just weeks before the prodigious composer’s death. Stoltzman is equally at home playing Copland’s jazzy Clarinet Concerto, commissioned by the great band leader and clarinetist Benny Goodman.

Guest conductor Predrag Gosta makes his Strathmore debut in a concert that celebrates Mendelssohn’s birth and pays homage to Haydn’s passing 200 years ago. The Lord Nelson Mass, named for the British admiral who defeated Napoleon in Egypt and Italy, calls for dramatic soaring runs for the soprano and culminates in a jubilant finale. Rediscovered in the 1980s, Mendelssohn’s grand choral Symphony No. 2 was composed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the invention of printing.

Mezzo-soprano Kendall Gladen brings to life the manipulative and magnetic personality of Carmen in this simply staged concert performance. Set in Seville, Spain, around 1830, the story revolves around a beautiful gypsy who woos the young corporal Don José. The relationship ends tragically when Don José murders Carmen after she rejects him for the bullfighter Escamillo.

Come under the spell of Mussorgsky’s celebrated orchestral tone poem that portrays a spooky, nocturnal witches’ Sabbath, and listen to strains of Tchaikovsky’s heartbreaking final symphony.

Ticket holders for the concert on Saturday, January 30th who were unable to attend the performance may exchange their tickets for the repeat performance on January 31 at 3 p.m. Simply take your January 30th tickets to the Strathmore Ticket Office at least 45 minutes (2:15 p.m.) before the start of the performance. You may exchange your tickets for January 31st on a first-come-first served basis while supplies last.

Celebrate the versatility of string and vocal music in this concert featuring Vivaldi’s sacred choral masterpiece, Gloria, and Barber’s moving Adagio for Strings (also arranged for chorus, entitled Agnus Dei), heard in Oliver Stone’s Oscar-winning film Platoon. Soprano Audrey Elizabeth Luna is showcased in Andreas Makris’s Symphony for Soprano and Strings, a piece originally composed for the National Philharmonic that incorporates various love poems.

Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is filled with delicate and poignant melodies, reminiscent of his famous mazurkas and other Polish folk dances. Ignacy Jan Paderewski, a brilliant pianist, composer and statesman, reveals the influence of Chopin in his concerto, which overflows with charming melodies and bravura passages.
