Workshop participants will be led through the steps to turning their family memiors into written stories. Everyone will be given an opportunity to have their material critiqued, though sharing a manuscript with the class is not a requirement.

Lynn Stearns has led memior and story construction workshops for over ten years. She is the associate fiction editor for the Potomac Review, and has had her work published many anthologies and literary magazines, including The Baltimore Review, Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul 2, Wascana Review, and Women Today.

These morning classes are designed to give young children (ages 3 to 5) an early introduction to a singing story and provide a springboard to future opera experiences. The students will work with two popular tales —“The Three Little Pigs” and “The Little Red Hen.” Taught by Yvette Lewis, a renowned music educator, the class concludes with an opera performance by the children for family and friends.

Parents/guardians are welcome to stay and observe the class, but are not required to stay.

Discover your own style as you enjoy learning the basics of jazz singing in this class taught by Connaitre Miller, a faculty member of the Howard University Jazz department. Learn mprovisation techniques, vocal warm-ups, nterpretation, performance practices, and more. Then join the class in a performance cabaret to lose the session!

This workshop will teach high school and college students the vocal acrobatics of beat-box as used in a capella singing. It will be presented by our popular former Artist in Residence, Dave Baumgartner, of the a capella group Almost Recess.

Bring your family and friends to explore folk traditions and the joy of singing in harmony in this lively sing-along.

David returns! After his initial "Strathmore Sings" last December, we couldn't resist re-convening "the Laboratory of No Wrong Notes" once again with this award-winning singer, songwriter, and masterfully inclusive facilitator from Cape Cod. Under David's playful, participatory, and interactive guidance, he will help us raise our voices (young, seasoned, everyone in between) and spirits together.

Recommended for ages 6 and up.

Learn quick and easy book structures during this engaging 2 hour workshop with artist Karen O. Brown. Starting with the French Fold (a simple way to make a little 8 page book from one piece of paper) the class will continue with a Maze Book and the Accordion Fold. You will learn how to make a cover and add extra pages to the Accordion Book.

Each structure taught can be adapted to many types of books such as short stories, recipes, photos and more!

All materials are furnished.

Karen Brown is a lively instructor and specializes in bookarts, art using recycled materials and bringing out creativity in everyone!

Workshop participants will learn about the differnt kinds of collage (from scrap-booking to art in 3 dimensions), the history of collage in fine art, review materials that can be used for collage (are there really any limits?), and proper adhesives. The class will finish with a hands-on collage session using 2-dimensional materials. Participants may bring some of their own materials to place in a collage, if they wish.

This concert and lecture complements the International Exhibition of Fine Art in Miniature on view in the Mansion galleries. Pianist and lecturer Rachel Franlkin will be joined by Airi Yoshioka in a concert of "musical miniatures" by Claude Debussy, Fritz Kreisler and Sergei Prokofiev. The evening will conclude with a wine bar and an opportunity to view the exhibition.
