Yuri Temirkanov, conductor Bruno Leonardo Gelber, piano
Program Mendessohn: The Hebrides Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 23, K. 488 Elgar: Enigma Variations
The program opens with Mendelssohn's loveliest overture, Hebrides or "Fingal's Cave": a marvelous taste of wind and sea spray that recalls a rather stormy voyage he took off Scotland's wild west coast. Elgar's extraordinary series of musical portraits of himself, his wife, and his friends with a mystery portrait believed to be of a lady he was platonically in love with. Pianist Bruno Leonardo Gelber will return to perform another of the greatest of Mozart's piano concertos, No. 23, with its beautiful and rather sad slow movement.
Encore at Strathmore Skip the traffic and relax with Restaurant Associates after the concert featuring decadent desserts, cappucinos, lattes, and international coffees in the Lockheed Martin Lobby.
