Stan Engebretson, Conductor Arianna Zukerman, soprano Karl Dent, tenor Leon Williams, baritone
The War Requiem, a statement of Britten’s anti-war sentiments and an urgent call for unity, was first performed in 1962 for the reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed during World War II. The text is compiled from the Latin Mass for the Dead and interspersed with nine poems written by Wilfred Owen, one of the great war poets. Writing to his sister after the premiere, Britten remarked, “I hope it’ll make people think a bit.”
