HAYDN Symphony No. 85, “The Queen” HAYDN Cello Concerto in D major SCHUBERT Symphony No. 5
Haydn’s Symphony No. 85, composed in 1785, was a favorite of French Queen Marie Antoinette, earning it the nickname “La Reine” or “The Queen.” Composed two years earlier, the D major Cello Concerto was not fully authenticated until Haydn’s signature was discovered on the manuscript in 1951. The delightful Symphony No. 5 by the nineteen-year-old Schubert concludes the program.
