In April, the year-long partnership with Broad Acres Elementary School culminated in a wonderful Spring Break at Strathmore, five days of multi-disciplinary arts workshops for 28 fourth and fifth graders. The students, representing fourteen different countries of origin, focused for the week on the theme of Who I Am and Who We Are. They learned about themselves and one another and wrote scripts for puppet shows which they performed for their families at the end of the week. They also performed a hip-hop dance number and two original rap songs they wrote as a group. Two visual art projects - a memory box and a large paper figure based on artist Keith Haring’s work - provided a beautiful backdrop for the final performance.

Strathmore’s Year-Long Title I Program Holds Art and Writing Workshop
In January, 28 fourth and fifth graders from Broad Acres Elementary School visited Strathmore for a full day of arts experiences. Students wrote out family stories, then toured the Fabric of Survival exhibit, led by the grand-daughter of the artist. After the tour, they made fabric pictures to represent their own family stories.
Title I students from Broad Acres experience programs all year long presented by Strathmore. These students will come to Strathmore for arts workshops on teacher work days in January and March, then for the whole week of Spring Break (the programs are planned when school is out to alleviate the need for working parents to find quality childcare). The Spring Break at Strathmore program, in its fourth year, brings arts experiences to under-served students.
The program is funded by a generous contribution from Carolyn and Jeff Leonard.
